    Houses the documents of Budapest since 1873, as well as records for the cities of Buda, Pest, Obuda, as well as those of predecessor towns
  • National Archives of Hungary
    Over 77,000 linear metres of foundational charters and documents produced over the last thousand years of the history of Hungary. Covers central legislative, administrative, and jurisdictional records, as well as documents of historical value from offices, institutions, bodies and associations with national authority and organs, families and persons of national significance
  • Military History Archives
    Conatains documents about the military and national defense of Hungary
  • Hungarian Jewish Archives
    Collects abandoned Jewish community materials and history of the Jews in Hungary. Includes documents created by Jewish Organizations (Communities, Central Boards, Associations, Jewish Schools, Hospitals, Elderly Homes etc.), Jewish personalities if employees of the Community, records on anti-Semitism, anti-Jewish Laws, and the Holocaust


  • National Széchényi Library
    Book collection consisting of 1200 volumes of manuscripts, and covering 19th century and before. Documents and letters of individuals, microfilm collection, map collection, and historic interview collection

Some of the major records sources that can be used for genealogy research in Hungary include:

  • Birth, marriage, and death records were kept by some towns as early as 1500s
  • Birth, marriage, and death records have been recorded by the government from 1895 to the present
  • National census records and tax lists were recorded beginning in 1696
  • Land records were kept by the towns and counties from the time they were settled
  • Church Registers [Anyakonyvek] Records of births/christenings, marriages, and deaths/burials recorded by churches from 1630 to the present. Includes First Communions, Confirmations, and conversions. Roman Catholic registers began in 1563 (most date from 1686). Greek Catholic, Reformed, and Lutheran registers began in early 1700s. Protestant registers began in 1787.
  • Newspapers were written in many areas and time periods that contain information such as notices of marriages, notices of death, and obituaries
  • Military records
  • Town and county histories about the settlers and their families
  • Ship passenger lists, tax lists, and town records were recorded for many areas
