Some of the major records sources that can be used for genealogy research in Australia include:

  • Birth, marriage, and death records have been kept from the beginning of European settlement in 1788 but are not a complete record of all vital events
  • Civil registration of birth, marriage, and death records have been registered by the state governments from the mid 1850s to the present
  • Census records in general are not available, most returns have been destroyed and only statistical information is available. Some records survive, for example the 1828 and 1841 censuses
  • Land records have been kept by the states
  • Probate records (1790-present)
  • Church records of christenings, marriages, deaths, and other information about their members (1780s-present)
  • Newspapers written in many areas and time periods that contain births, marriages, and obituaries
