Several months ago I wrote a blog entitled DNA in Genealogy: How does this help me? to explain some of the basics of genetic testing and the different types of tests available for genealogy, and much of the feedback to that blog asked questions about which companies would be reputable and reliable to use for your own genetic testing, so I'm going to answer a few of those questions here:
Do all of the DNA test providers give me the same amount of information? Their prices are all so different, I'm not sure what I should look at beyond the cost. I know about Ancestry's DNA, but are they the best? Or are there other companies out there who I should consider getting a test from instead?
The test that you'll want to have completed first is the autosomal (at) DNA test - this test will give you your genetic ethnic origins and allow you to find new relatives. There are a lot of companies who advertise DNA testing, but for users in the United States I recommend staying with the top companies, which I'll overview here:
- FamilyTreeDNA Family Finder Test (Autosomal DNA) $89 + $12.95 Shipping
- Founded in 2000, this is the longest running of the top companies
- Approximately 500,000 users
- The only company to offer Autosomal, Y-DNA, and mtDNA tests. Most additional tests and upgrades can be performed from your original DNA sample
- Classify users' DNA into 24 ethnic regions
- Allow you to upload your "raw DNA" from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and National Geographicâ's Genographic Project to compare with the FTDNA database
- Accredited laboratory at the University of Arizona
- 23andMe Ancestry Service (Autosomal DNA) $99 + $9.95 Shipping (If Ordered)
- Founded in 2006
- 2 Million + users
- Classify users' DNA into 31 ethnic regions
- Tests available for purchase from Target and CVS stores
- Accredited laboratory
- Most well known for their Health tests, 23andMe gained approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016 for their "Genetic Health Risks" and "Carrier Status" reports.
- AncestryDNA (Autosomal DNA) $99 + $9.95 Shipping
- Founded in 2012
- 4 Million Users
- Classify users' DNA into 26 ethnic regions
- Integrates with Ancestry family trees to provide possible ancestor connections.
- Third-party laboratory (accreditation unknown)
- MyHeritage DNA (Autosomal DNA) $79 + $12 Shipping
- Founded in late 2016
- Accredited laboratory
- Allow users to upload "raw DNA" from all other testing companies.
- Right now they are still the "new kids on the block", so their user database probably isn't very large at this point in time, but it is growing.
